At the end of March, the Evict Radon team, consisting of Dr. Aaron Goodarzi (Lead Researcher), Weston Jacques (Communications Strategist) and Josh Taron (Associate Dean Research in Environmental Design) set off for a fact-finding trip to Europe to meet with industry leaders around radon technology and the built environment. The first meetings to take place happened in Rotterdam, Netherlands where the team met with and toured the space of Studio RAP.

Studio RAP is an architectural design company that combines the power of computational design with innovative digital fabrication methods. Their team consists of architects, designers, roboticist, programmers and researchers. They explore innovative technology, trying to improve the way we design, produce, manage and build architecture.

Their design studio is located in the Innovation Dock in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Basically, a massive ship dock that has been converted into a multipurpose space. It is there that they develop innovative building processes together with extraordinary design.

Radon is a naturally occurring gas, but what isn’t natural is the way that it accumulates in our buildings. It is important for us to understand the link between radon and the built environment so we can understand what architectural elements lead to high levels of radon in the home.

The term-built environment refers to human-made surroundings. Innovative architect firms like Studio RAP are changing the way we think about building construction. In particular, they are leading the way for robotic fabrication. With this, they are rethinking the architectural profession and creating expressive buildings while helping to solve problems for the building industry. We encourage you to visit their website to learn more about them as they and others continue to challenge traditional architecture.
